Note:- Using ‘Unless’ in place of ‘if’ means you have to make the other part negative if it is in the affirmative and vice versa.

*A negative sentence is one where there are negative words like ‘not’, ‘never’, and ‘none’ whereas an Affirmative sentence is one where there are no negative words.

Steps to take care while using ‘Unless’:

1. Use the Conjunction ‘unless’ to mean ‘if not’. (That means ‘if not’ has to be replaced with ‘unless.’

2. Remove ‘do not’, ‘does not’, and ‘not’ when you convert or transform the sentence.

Explanation: There are 2 kinds of sentences found in the usage of ‘Unless.’

Look at these 2 sentences and their answers and attempt the rest of the exercises based on these two examples:

1. If the vehicle is not ready, we will go on foot.

Answer:- Unless the vehicle is ready, we will go on foot.

Explanation of the above sentence: In place of ‘If’, use the word ‘Unless’ and make the first part of the sentence Affirmative. Remove the negative word ‘not’, and in the second part of the sentence ‘we will go on foot’ remains the same as in the question.

2. If you do not water the plants, they will not grow.

Answer:- Unless you water the plants, they will not grow.

Answer:- Unless Rita submits the assignment today, she will lose her marks.

2. If you work hard, you will not fail.

Answer:- Unless you work hard, you will fail.

3. If you do not pay the fee, you will not be allowed to write the exam.

Answer:- Unless you pay the fee, you will not be allowed to write the exam.

4. If you do not work hard in all subjects, you will not pass the exam.

Answer:- Unless you work hard in all subjects, you will not pass the exam.
